Conservation Workshops

Age: Conservation Workshops are designed for people of all ages. This could include individual adults, families, or individual children. Children aged 12 and under should attend with at least one adult in order to learn together about how to take an active role in conservation.

Structure: Each workshop will include:

  1. An educational presentation in the Conservation Classroom in the Discovery Center
  2. A hike to a location on Zoo property (may be on natural terrain outside the Zoo in our Forest Preserve and Prairie)
  3. A hands-on project (some tool use may be required to complete)

Day & Time: Designated Saturdays from 10am-12pm

Prices for each 2-hour individual class:

Zoo Member Prices:

  • Age 4-13 years = $15
  • Age 14 years – Adult = $20

Non-Member Prices:

  • Age 4-13 years = $17
  • Age 14 years – Adult = $22

Discounts: 5% off for six to nine workshops. 10% off for ten or more.

Project Kits: Some projects require materials and may need the additional purchase of a kit. Depending on the project, kits will cost either $15 or $30 to cover the purchase of materials to build a bat box, squirrel feeder, bird house, or planting native seeds to grow over winter. These completed projects are for participants to take home. If multiple people such as a family or group are attending together, only one kit is required (unless you choose to buy more).

Shelter for the Shadows – November 1, 2025

Backyard Botanist – Part 1 – November 15, 2025

Want flower-power? Grow your knowledge on how to prep a garden and grow seeds over the winter for spring plantings. Backyard Botanist is the first of two classes that will help you plant a pollinator garden this upcoming spring. Part 2 is the follow up class and will be on March 21.

Carbon Mission – December 6, 2025

We are on a mission possible to cut carbon. Attend a mission impossible themed class called Carbon Mission where you will learn how you can minimize your carbon footprint. Cue the theme music! DUN DUN DUN-DUN! DUN DUN DUN-DUN! DO-DO-DOOOOO! DO-DO-DOOOO!

 

Recycling Revolution – January 24, 2026

When you wish upon a… jar… or a bottle… or a can… Have you ever wished you knew what was actually recyclable? Join us for our Recycling Revolution class to learn about wish-cycling and the importance of reducing, reusing, and rethinking before recycling.

 

Trash to Treasured – February 7, 2026

Let your creativity blossom for those you love! You will be able to craft an undying flower made of upcycled dishes for your garden in our class called Trash to Treasured.

Bird Bungalow – February 21, 2026

Hey, you! You’re so fly! We think you’d love our Bird Bungalow class. You can learn about the importance of bird houses. Take the opportunity to build one for your home.

Nourishing Natives – March 7, 2026

Feeling peckish? Your native neighborhood friends probably are too! Join us for our Backyard Bistro class to craft an upcycled teacup bird feeder, a squirrel picnic table… or why not both?

Backyard Botanist – Part 2 – March 21, 2026

Come nurture your garden of pollinator plant knowledge in part two of our Backyard Botanist class. Design your own pollinator pocket and learn planting tips for our pollinator friends this spring.

 

Insect Inn – March 28, 2026                                                                                                 

Can we bug you for a second? Join us for our Insect Inn class and learn about the importance of bugs in our local ecosystem. In this class, you will get to make your very own bug hotel for these important bugs that live in your backyard.

 

Compost Crew – April 11, 2026

Dirty your hands and learn how to start composting in our Compost Crew class. Make rich, fertile soil for your garden!

 

Tame the Invasives and Grow the Natives – April 18, 2026                                        

Find out how to Tame the Invasives and Grow the Natives where you will learn how to identify whether plants in your backyard are native or invasive and how to manage them. You will leaf this class with a lot of new plant knowledge and know-how!

 

Pollinator Patrol – April 25, 2026                                                                                       

We are buzzing with excitement! Come to our Pollinator Patrol class where you will learn the importance of bees for pollination, how to identify them, and how to help them.
